Creating extensions that can be installed, uninstalled and updated without a browser restart used to be very painful but got a whole lot easier with Firefox 8. I am now making all my add-ons restartless, Diagnostics for Adblock Plus is the first try. The current development build (Diagnostics 1.2b.156) should work exactly like the previous versions but e.g. disable immediately if you click the corresponding button in the Add-ons Manager. Reasonably new browser versions are required (at least Firefox 8, Thunderbird 8, SeaMonkey 2.5), old versions are no longer supported.

A while ago there was an announcement that AMO would try to reduce the number of “trusted” add-ons (meaning: add-ons where an update would immediately become available without review). The old approach was to mark add-ons as “trusted” if they are popular and go through a thorough testing process before each release. The new approach is to grant this status only if absolutely needed. Obviously, Adblock Plus and Element Hiding Helper no longer match the definition of a “trusted” add-on and so this status has been revoked now.

Starting with Diagnostics 1.1.4 this extension will no longer be available on the Mozilla Add-ons website. The main purpose of this release is to switch over update checks to adblockplus.org, this will allow automatic notifications about updates. It also fixes a minor issue: homepage link in the About Diagnostics dialog didn’t work.

Adblock Plus Watcher has been renamed into Diagnostics for Adblock Plus. Diagnostics 1.1.3a.20100708 restores compatibility with Adblock Plus 1.3a, it isn’t compatible to Adblock Plus 1.2 and below however. There are more changes coming, in particular better management of the dependency on Adblock Plus. But this version is usable again. Other changes:
- New extension icon, no longer reusing the icon from Adblock Plus
- Own About dialog, no longer opening the dialog from Adblock Plus
