This site is different, it does not detect if you have Adblock, it detects if you block their ads.
Difference is, that you can block ads also without Adblock or any other ad blocking software, like just use Default Firefox or Opera and turn "Image load" or JavaScript Off, and you get "Banner Blocking Detected" -message.

I would agree that some advertising has become extremely obnoxious, but it is advertising that pays for most of the content and services we are able to use for free on the Internet. Without advertising we would either have to pay for said services or those services simply wouldn't exist. Being required to choose between free ad-supported access or paid ad-free access is reasonable.

Why should websites provide their services to people who are not willing to compensate websites for their services? Producing quality content and delivering that content costs time, money and resources. It is perfectly reasonable for web publishers to expect compensation for their efforts and it is completely unreasonable to believe you have a right to services that you are unwilling to pay some form of compensation for. If you want to block ads, fine, but you also have to expect to occasionally be denied access or required to pay for ad-free access to some sites.

As time progresses, more and more sites will block users who block ads or will require users to pay a fee for ad free access as http://EnvironmentalChemistry.com does.

In regards to contacting websites and flaming them for their tactics, I would advise against sending rude or inflammatory messages. All this does is make the sender look like an idiot and harden the resolve of the website's publisher that they have made the right tactical move as this is not the kind of user they want on their site anyways. If you are blocked because of ad-blocking and the site does not provide an ad-free option, I would suggest sending a polite message asking the site to provide an ad-free subscription option.

At least Adblock Plus provides you an easy way to white list sites that you need to use but aren't able to gain ad-free access to.

Just add the site to the Support Websites feature in Adblock, that way you still don't have to look at their ads.
