ABP won't install

Postby Cleric » Tue Aug 19, 2008 9:04 pm

I'm running a Mac OS, not quite sure what build but when I try to install it, it says install failed.

I'm using my school laptop maybe the internet filter has something to do with it? They use ContentBarrier X4

Maybe you could try to save the .xpi file to your computer, then drag the file into your Firefox 3 window.

i'm sure there are places which host the ABP install xpi somewhere else... like here: http://adblockplus.org/en/installation

use the single language build...

install error message

Firefox could not install the file at

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefo ... +tb+sm.xpi

because: Unexpected installation error
Review the Error Console log for more details.

Please go to your Firefox profile and remove the files extensions.cache, extensions.rdf and extensions.ini - next time you start Firefox these files will be created again and you should be able to install extensions (this problem isn't limited to Adblock Plus).

PS: Added the description of this problem to http://adblockplus.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=925, this has been asked often enough.

I have a similar problem: ABP won't install on my Mac.

I tried blowing away the extensions.* files and restarting Firefox as suggested, to no avail.

ABP works fine in my main account (super user), but it won't install in the other user accounts.

Everything used to work with earlier versions of FF and ABP, roughly 6 months ago.

When I click on the "Install Adblock Plus" FF gives me a "Data Transfer Interrupted" message. I also tried to click on the en-US single language build. That actually downloads a file, but then FF gives an error message saying this: "Adblock Plus could not be installed because it is not compatible with Firefox 3.0.3."

That clearly isn't possible, since it already works fine in my other account.

Thanks for any clues... I would like to have my kids protected once again from web advertising.

Thanks Wladimir.

It turns out that wasn't the problem. I discovered that when you have Parental Controls enabled in a Mac OS user account, you need to explicitly allow access to adblockplus.org and mozilla.org in order for Adblock Plus to install and operate in that user's extensions folder.

It's obvious in hindsight, but it sure had me puzzled for a while.

Isn't it ironic that Parental Controls were preventing the elimination of advertising?

I can't seem to get it to download either and I've tried deleting the files as previously suggested, but I still get the same error.

Firefox could not install the file at

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefo ... +tb+sm.xpi

because: Invalid file hash (possible download corruption)

Oops, sorry about that.

I'm running Windows XP.

Unfortunately, I cannot bring up more on my computer unless I ask the repair shop. We've made a bit of a Frankenstein monster by taking the harddrive from my old computer and plugging it into a newer computer since I was having so many issues with it. Afterwards, for some reason, you have to really dig through to find anything that will tell you about what's inside of it. (Had a computer friend look at it once and he had never seen a PC do that before).

I really do wish I could be of more help. I've tried asking that same friend (as he was the one that recommended the plugin) but I haven't seen him for a few days.
