Cry me a river, for no software installation and no add-on browser extensions this is a great way to block ads... I don't see why everyone is hatin' on me though,,,Wladimir Palant wrote:Please read: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hosts_file ... edirection. It doesn't matter whether programs can manipulate it, you allow hostfile.mine.nu to define the contents of this file.biniar wrote:It's a text file used for the Windows OS, it's safe!
The other problem with hosts files: you can only list exact host names. E.g. if you have to handle foo1.example.com, foo2.example.com, foo3.example.com you have to list each of them individually. And if the advertisers decide to add foo4.example.com then you will have to add it to the list - no way do handle an entire domain.

Just because someone corrects you it does not mean they are hatin' on you
ABP is a great (and very effective) way to block ads in my experience, I've tried others (including hosts files) before it and none of them come close.no software installation and no add-on browser extensions this is a great way to block ads...

Nobody is hating you, so far you were the only one trying to offend other people. The other commenters gave reasonable arguments why host files are a bad solution. If you don't have anything useful to contribute to the discussion - please don't reply. You are tempting me to remove the next offensive non-sense comment.biniar wrote: Cry me a river, for no software installation and no add-on browser extensions this is a great way to block ads... Re: hotsfile.mine.nu - great ad blocking tutorial
If you're on unix you can do almost the same thing as far as the hosts file is concerned. And like I said a few times on windows too. It's like a seamless add-on for windows that you never notice.Add Block Plus is great and everything but not all people can install all these add-on's on public computers.Wladimir Palant wrote:Nobody is hating you, so far you were the only one trying to offend other people. Re: hotsfile.mine.nu - great ad blocking tutorial
But everybody can modify the hosts file on public computers? You must be joking... Changing hosts file always requires administrator privileges, installing Firefox add-ons can be done by any user.biniar wrote:Add Block Plus is great and everything but not all people can install all these add-on's on public computers.
For public places one thing I do is use firefox portable, setup how I like it on a USB stick.
If I was the system administrator of a public computer you would not be able to modify the hosts file.

Re: Porting request: Google Chrome
I use privoxy with Chrome, and it filters a lot of ads... but unfortunately no where near as many as nor as effectively as ad block plus.
more list developers will solve it
Iron, a different take on chromium than chrome, has ablocking built-in

and there is already an AdBlocker for chrome, http://www.adsweep.org/ it's not perfect but it works

Directly from that site...and it had an ad at the top.. which is very bizarre considering what the site is for. It doesn't appear to go anywhere so maybe it's suppose to be an example or something..but it's odd to use a flashing annoying example on an ad blocking site. JMHOUpdate: Due to lack of time, lack of technical support, and despite repeated requests with no feedback, I sadly had to discontinue the AdSweep project. You can still download it and tweak the source code to your needs if you know how to do so. I will no longer remove ads on demand. Thanks to those who have helped me.
Re: Porting request: Google Chrome
I didn't see where ChromePlus has ad blocking at all. Is this not a part of it?
Re: Porting request: Google Chrome
I don't believe chromeplus has adblocking, only Iron chrome. (though very primitive)
Re: Porting request: Google Chrome
correct fanboy. Chromeplus never had any adblocking features as I've checked myself.fanboy wrote:I don't believe chromeplus has adblocking, only Iron chrome. (though very primitive)
Support for Google Chrome "Extensions" and Google Chrome "Plugins" is still maybe a year away from being serious.
I have barely no problems using either the adsweep.user.js file or the adsweep.crx file with Chrome 3.0.195.24.
