From what I can tell the "adblockers" on Chrome are very primitive and content is still downloaded.

This was taken form the adthwart homepage:
Why do I see ads for a moment before they disappear? Why aren't all ads blocked?

Because of limitations in Chrome (or possibly my knowledge of the Chrome extension and DOM APIs), AdThwart can only remove or hide ads after they have been loaded; it can't actually prevent the browser from fetching them. This may also result in some ad-inserting scripts running even if they are listed in the filter lists. You can mitigate this by turning on the experimental ad-hiding mode on AdThwart's Options page. Once the Chrome extensions API changes or I find a better way, this issue will be fixed.

I am terribly sorry for reviving this topic now that it finally left the first page but I thought this might be at least mildly interesting to this audience.

I was made aware of a bug in Google's bug tracker for Chromium. It seems that Google is getting serious with implementing some kind of content filtering similar to what Gecko currently has. In addition to that it seems they are planning to ship it with an ABP-like functionality judging by several subtasks. It's interesting whether Google will ship it with a subscription option like the one in ABP or at least exposes the necessary interfaces to extend the built-in functionality. I am also curious how their referrer and cookie management will look like as I always wished for a cookie manager which allows to selectively block/delete cookies based on regular expressions and not solely by domain.

Erunno, That is of interest. I find it odd they didn't have this back in 1.0ish version, because they claim they are doing both the browser and the OS to make things more secure. But I have no idea the complexity it involves.

As the others say, if there's ABP is made for GC, I would gladly switch to it without a second thought.

Fo all of you using Chrome and desperately wanting a substitute for AdBlock+, I recommend you use both this extensions:

https://chrome.google.com/extensions/de ... ekmlcgokii

https://chrome.google.com/extensions/de ... kkbiglidom

Only the first one attempts to mimic AdBlock+ by blocking ads BEFORE they load, the other one just hides them real quickly once they have loaded. Using both this extensions at the same time has given me the functionality of AdBlock+ (the second one is necessary because the first one doesn't get to block all ads).
Try it for yourself!

Cheers!
Gaba

PD: this one https://chrome.google.com/extensions/de ... kjofaeooof I higly recommend too. It shows an 'Adblock' icon for the second extension in the top Chrome bar that lets you select any ads that may have slipped, and block them. It's not essential for this extensions to work, but it will make your transition easier.

AFAIK this is currently not possible in Chrome since it lacks the necessary functionality. The description for the extension only suggest that it is smarter when hiding ads, not that it is really blocking them.

I'm not sure what you mean, the description clearly reads:

"AdBlock Lite is THE ONLY extension that aims to hide advertisements before loading them."

You mean to say the developer is actually lying?

Key word here is "hide". The author does not say "block".

Will Chromium 5 allow a real blocking plugin?

This is the wrong place to ask - ask Chrome developers.

Well, i heard that google is preventing development of proper extension API to prevent advanced ad blockers. Afterall, they are still advertising company.
