Is ABP for FF functionality going to suffer? - WebExtensions

Post by CamJN »

I just read this and I've gotta say I'm worried. At the present only ABP on FF lets me block ads in video and moving to an extension model like what other browsers use sounds like we'll lose that.

Anyone have any better insight on this?

Why doesn't ABP become an independent proxy filter app, the way Webwasher used to be - are there any technical limitations to this nowadays (other than having to recode it all from scratch)? The bonus would be to be able to filter any traffic going through the filtered ports/protocols, regardless of browser/app and arbitrary plugin limitations (eg.: online help files, collab apps, etc.).

a proxy application can not deal with the encrypted traffic. See the issues in ABP for android (not adblock browser for android !) which is a proxy

Also, a proxy does not have access to the browser APIs that ABP extensions (or custom browser shells) do; see the limitations of ABP for Android and projects like adblock2privoxy.
There's a buzzin' in my brain I really can't explain; I think about it before they make me go to bed.

Using WebExtensions APIs in a "classic" extension
