Can Adblock Plus 0.6 hide ads?

Post by mefisto »

I really like the new Adblock Plus, but there's one feature I miss. The mcm version made it possible to choose sites that you want to support (by downloading the ads) but still hide the ads, so you don't see them cluttering up the page.

Can Adblock Plus 0.6 hide ads? Am I missing something? If the feature is there, it certainly isn't obvious to me how to enable it.

This is absolutely useless.

If you want to support a site, just put this site in the whitelist...

ps: if you don't see ads, only some people will remember to click so just let the site with his ads...

pages are mostly paid by clicks, not views. so you would not support a page by hiding the banners. you must click them.

(if you want to hide ads, you can use css http://www.gozer.org/mozilla/ad_blocking/

It may be mostly useless, but it is not absolutely useless.

I do whitelist some sites (actually, just one right now). Whitelisting isn't useless, right? All I want is the option to hide/collapse the ads on those whitelisted sites instead of completely blocking them.

If having the hiding feature is going to seriously degrade the extension, then OK, that's a reason to leave it out -- it's not a very important feature. But if Adblock Plus is only going to deal with most ads or most sites, then why have any configurable features at all?

I wouldn't see a problem with it being in there. Bloat? I don't really think so myself. But I have to agree most sites don't get MONEY from views, but they do get rated according to views. And advertisers will pay more for a higher traffic site. So, saying that they get paid NOTHING for viewing.. isn't exactly accurate.

Btw, re-reading my post..sounds like I'm for it. I never really used it before. I was just stating an opinion.

If you want to hide ads, but not block them, maybe it were better to use RIP (Remove It Permanently).

Yeah, that's in fact what I'm doing for now. But I would prefer using just one extension to deal with ads rather than two. And I don't really want to go back to Adblock Plus 0.5. As I said earlier, I really like the 0.6 version. Whatever. I'm just hoping the ad hiding eventually makes its way back into the new Adblock Plus.

Some people think like you, but I prefer Linux approach: specialized applications instead of I-can-make-everything general applications. According to my personal experience, which can be completely different from other people cases, ABP0.6+RIP work better than ABP0.5. RIP is a relatively unknown extension. but very good IMHO.

What you call a "linux approach" is what I'm wishing for. I want an extension that specialises in dealing with ads. Wladimir has come along and begun to make a very useful extension work better, and I'm simply hoping that a missing feature makes its way back into the extension.

And you'll notice that I said I'm using Adblock Plus 0.6 together with RIP, instead of going back to using Adblock Plus 0.5. So it turns out you think like me!
