Unblockable "Invisible" Ads on Website

Post by JakeCWolf »

I came across a few ads on a site I browse often, rule34.xxx, ones not blocked like all the other ones on the site. I try right click and select "block this image/frame" and no such prompt appears, unlike how it does on every other ad on the site now long since blocked. So I try opening up blockable items on the page, all the currently blocked items are already blocked and invisible but these new ads don't appear at all, they are "invisible", I have check they are clickable links.

So what's going on here? Is Adblock Plus (for Firefox obviously) out of date? Is this some new type of ad that gets around how Adblock Plus hides ads? Love some feedback, ads make me very paranoid despite having both Maleware Bytes and Avast! and alternating scanning with each every other night.

Direct link or a screenshot? The content is not safe for work, it's a porn site if you didn't know (not trying to be insulting, some people may legitimately not know what rule 34 is slang for), and I didn't want to get in trouble for linking to such a place.

It's okay to link to NSFW content on this forum; in case you're a bit worried, check the "Do not automatically parse URLs" box in the Options tab underneath the Preview and Submit buttons. (This sort of thing should be standard practice when mentioning sites known to have malvertising or other computer-harming stuff.)

With that said, while browsing that site myself, seeing things that cannot be unseen, I checked out three ads below a particular image and found that they were injected data: URIs inside iframes with their src attributes somehow set to about:blank; I figured out, from the script blocks below making reference to ExoClick, that these injected ads relied on loading a particular URL, and once it's blocked, those three ads were gone and the desirable content still loaded.

Try adding the following filter to your custom filters:

Code: Select all

||rule34.xxx/r34.php
Oh, here's the URL I looked at (NWS and NMS): http://rule34.xxx/index.php?page=post&s=view&id=2092495
There's a buzzin' in my brain I really can't explain; I think about it before they make me go to bed.

Sorry for the late reply, and your life scarring experience with that site, and thank you for your reply, but I'm struggling a little, how do I add a custom filter? The instructions I've found don't say how, only you can. Something about running commands with "!".

Ah, that did it, thanks! I was confused as the panel to the right wasn't appearing before, now I know why and was able to put the custom filter in, ads are gone now. :D

It looks like the cat-and-mouse game is on:

Code: Select all

||rule34.xxx/r35.js
