Having trouble with customizable blocking

Post by virtualjupiter »

Easylist doesn't have nearly enough blocking capacity for the sites I look at, so usually I open blockable items before using the page with hopes that eventually I'll render all the ads and popups blocked. Easylist permits many ads that I don't want, I can't figure out how to change that. If I disable the filter, then try to block it, it simply reverts back to being acceptable because easylist's preferences seem to trump anything I do.
Also, when trying to block most third party scripts, absolutely nothing happens. Nothing is blocked at all. I don't understand what I'm doing wrong and would very much welcome a resource to learn.

EasyList has exception rules because they are required to keep pages from breaking; they have nothing to do with the Acceptable Ads Initiative.

With that said, uBlock Origin allows you to override exception filters, by using the "important" filter option in a blocking filter.
There's a buzzin' in my brain I really can't explain; I think about it before they make me go to bed.

You can, but you shouldn't, because they are mostly redundant; you'll just be greatly increasing your memory usage for no real benefit. (This also goes for using AdBlock at the same time as uBO or ABP.)

smed79, let me be clear that I'm not an expert on any of this, I wish there were a resource where I could learn about all of this so that I could understand what I'm doing. But no one has been able to tell me where that resource exists and I can't find one. I recently had to reinstall everything, but before that I was able to block bootstrap and googleapis, which stopped popups, some of which were clearly dangerous. I had also previously been able to block mjid, which is a vicious producer of popups and ads. Because of my inexperience and difficulty finding explanations I try to block pretty much all 3rd party scripts, popups, anything with "$" in the address. Before my reinstall, this kept me blissfully free of ads and popups.

"Give an example sites where are allowed?... so we can try help you !"
The site I'm using where I'm experiencing this trouble is on http://the-watch-series.to, is that the info you were looking for from me?

Thank you for helping.

The webmasters are using such simple scripts

Code: Select all

http://bambergerkennanchitinous.com/path/ads/ads.js
to test if some adblocker is used. They can test if the script above is blocked and if it is they will push in the page some malicious popups / ads. If it's whitelisted, they will think all it's ok and the normal ads are displayed (and they wont push their crap anymore).

read
forum/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=42628

however, the main thing for you is: Do the filters above work for you ?
Feedback ?

I wish there were a resource where I could learn about all of this so that I could understand what I'm doing.
- filters
- filter-cheatsheet
- development-builds/new-css-property-filter-syntax

Sometimes the blocking break site functionality that's why they are whitelisted by the list maintainers or in other cases to fix an anti adblock.
