Can't seem to block a floating video

Post by OHanraha-hanrahan »

I wonder if anyone can help, there is an annoyance on one of the news websites that I visit: dailymail.co.uk. Now when visiting the front page there is a video that opens up and auto plays; I would guess that it first tries to play an advert, but I don't see that, adblock seems to be able to block the advert portion of the video; but I would like to get rid of the player popping up.

Initially I tried using the block element, no luck. Then I used the inspector to get the name of the divs no luck.

The block element had found: dailymail.co.uk##.mol-controls-overlay-main-controls, I tried adding a div that wrapped around that one: ##.jwplayer_body_1, and a few others and still the thing appears.

Can anyone look at the page and see what is going on.

(P.S. Yes, acquired taste news wise, but I hasted to add it is one of several sites I use, I am not a devotee!!)

hi there!

Try typing About:config in your URL Bar.
Find media.autoplay.enabled
double click true so that it's changed to false

Let me know if that helps!

you can also try https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/block-autoplay

Thanks

Hello,

Thank you very much for your reply.

Actually in my about:config there is no media.autoplay.enabled but I changed the media.autoplay.default to 1 and also the ask permission and this has now worked!

It hadn't occurred to me to go down that route. To me when you just click on a page to READ something it is very very annoying to have a video starting to play, it is so strange how so many websites seem to have behaviours which are going to be annoying to many visitors - but I guess many of these vids start with an advert, so even if people immediately pause or mute them ,they can say that people have watched the ad.
