Stealth Adblock

Post by mschuyler »

Seems like Adblock is growing ever less useful. Nearly every site now says they have "detected an adblocker and won't I please whitelist them if I want to use the site. Now for some I don't mind at all, but this is now pervasive. Are you doing anything at all to block these detection systems? Does another version do a better job?

Hi @mschulyer!

We are aware that more sites are requiring our users to turn off their ad blockers. It is legally within their right to request this, but we do not think it is a best practice for promoting a fully sustainable web. Not to worry we are investigating ways to legally combat this to better serve our users. Can you send us some example URLs where you are encountering this? Also what filter lists are you currently using. Check out some of our supported filter lists here subscriptions :)

Thanks

Mmmm.....Stealth ad-blocking sounds like a great idea if it can be done legally and if it's not technically too difficult to implement. Surely it's only the fact that the ad men know they're being blocked that allows them to strike back at all? It'd also be neat to stop Windows from telling websites the user's hardware profile, so that they couldn't identify individual computers except by the user's consent, but I've no idea whether a browser plugin would have any control over that.
If it turns out to be illegal, maybe there's a loophole? Definitely worth looking into IMHO :-)

Hello,

I was wondering if there was an update on this issue. I have to say that websites are getting out of hand with their adblock detection pop ups and it is getting to the point where I am about to uninstall my adblock software since it is causing more hassle than good.'

If you guys cannot ship a version where you block all of those things due to legal reasons, would it be possible to ship us something that users could configure with some config file to be able to remove all those adblock detecting sites? perhaps the user file could be shared in forums between users in the community.

Anyhow... that is just an idea meant to stimulate some outside the box thinking over there.

I don't see how it could be illegal to hide any of this information as long as I am only READING the site and not interactively posting stuff on it.

If it's a news article, as long as I don't wish to post a comment at the end, I don't know why they have to know anything about me - who I am, what operating system or browser I use or what I am running on it.

If they want ads host their own in the content.

I see this was raised 4 years ago and it took about a year for someone to reply back then. This forum doesn't exactly get much response, and 4 years later hasn't got what seems like a basic job done, i.e. putting the blocker further along the line or maybe even creating your own browser that provides the experience we want - absorb the data from the site, don't give anything back unauthorised including what we actually get to see at the end of the day and what you don't show us.

And obviously if the "ad" is going to install stuff on our computer, you dont let it.

Similarly cookies: The only purpose should be if we are going to maintain an interactive session with the site and log in. If not and we are just reading content there is no need for any cookie usage whatsoever.
