4OD has blocked adblocker

Post by kitman »

As of today, 4OD has blocked Adblock plus. Is there a work around or will we have to wait for a new version or are we stuck with ads?

It's blocking users whose clients aren't loading some particular file; no site can directly detect ABP or any other ad-blocking method.

Now what subscriptions are you using, and do you have an example of a URL where you have a problem?
Also, you may want to create an Adblock Plus report: en/getting_started#false-positives

The maintainer of one or more of your lists will detect this false positive and do everything possible to ensure you can still access 4OD.

4oD won't enable you to play a programme without ABP being disabled. It says on the player itself "Error Please ensure Ad blocker software is disabled".

Can you submit an Adblock Plus report?

Perhaps get with the folks behind DownloadHelper or a similar addon to write rules for 4OD. It won't be nearly as convenient as one click Flash but it would solve your ad problem.

The issue of compatibility vs. ad neutralization was touched on in another thread. Maybe in the more extreme cases where ABP can't maintain compatibility with the video it should give a user notice that they can benefit from a downloader addon to get the content without the ads.

If video sites continue to be aggressive in pushing garbage we will have to look into building an addon which both goes to the desired target stream directly and effects an element level replacement of the rotten proprietary Flash player which is enforcing the site's ads.

That site looks like it has a lot of content. Perhaps an altruist will take some time and use a little yo ho ho to help out those who want to see the content without having their browser load the ads. While I'm sure some self-righteous crusader will take offense to my suggestion of using the Bay, the fact remains that careful inspection/evaluation of the HTML and JS will yield a URL which can be downloaded straight, with no advertising. Whether the user gets their download from careful HTML inspection, DownloadHelper, or a P2P swarm is irrelevant. In all cases the ad impressions are zero.

I have posted a report.
Your report has been saved. You can access it at the following address: https://reports.adblockplus.org/dfbf89b ... 5cb4d33e34

Btw, whoever made adblocker should get cake and nobel prizes and stuff. Who ever made adds should be charged with crimes against my eyes and forced to watch the ABC for the rest of their lives.

Can you please try adding the following filters (1 at a time) and tell me if either of them help

@@http://www.channel4.com/static/global/j ... ShowAds.js

@@http://www.channel4.com/static/global/j ... PageAds.js

@@http://www.channel4.com/media/scripts/o ... ager-v3.js

If none help try all once

It is going to take some patience until we can get this right.

I posted about it in the EasyList forum; for future reference, although EasyList developers check this forum too: http://forums.lanik.us/viewtopic.php?f=64&t=9275

My guess is that this filter is causing the problem (can't exactly test because 4OD is not available in the United States)...

Code: Select all

/realmedia/ads/*
Then again, Hubird may know better because he is actually based in the UK.

I'm actually in Australia and can not access the videos either. I was just guessing from the issue report.

From memory

Code: Select all

/realmedia/ads/*
causes it's fair share of issues but not sure if I have ever seen it used for ABP detection.

The issue was fixed in easylist 21 hours ago. Just force update your subscription since your last update is 37 hours ago.

You will see the ads after force updating. At the moment it is not possible to view the video without watching the video ads.

That's the whitelist required

Code: Select all

@@||realmedia.channel4.com/RealMedia/ads/adstream_sx.ads/channel4.newcu/$object-subrequest,~third-party
Although you could watch the same program on their youtube channel without the video ads.
for example, http://www.channel4.com/programmes/rich ... n-hold/4od
this video requires you to watch 3 video ads before watching the show.
Although the same video can be watched on their official youtube channel without ad https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d7fS3DAX4kU

they seem to upload all shows to https://www.youtube.com/4od but I have no idea about the delay before uploading to youtube.
Use the youtube search to find the video. Note: you need to search using the full program name to find the video.

Edit: Looks like they haven't uploaded The Fabulous Baker Brothers program to youtube yet. Unfortunately you will have to sit through 3 video ads before watching the program.

Its been fixed in so much as... you no longer need to disable adblocker to watch 4od... but you still have to watch the adverts

I noticed this tonight too, and can confirm the updated easylist fix which is great.

As mentioned earlier in the OP it seems if you allow all (as requested by 4od) a request is made to http://www.channel4.com/static/programm ... advert.htm which is a 'blank' page (view source)

Easyprivacy is catching realmedia.channel4.com/RealMedia/ads/adstream_lx.ads

Code: Select all

// display or remove this ad depending on whether it has 'empty.gif'
It's caught by

Code: Select all

~mycareer.com.au,~nytimes.com,~yellowbook.com##.adContainer
This also seems interesting: http://dz.glanceguide.com/errl.php?clie ... 7440107293 which returns text S1 in the browser. This appears to be the last filter hit, in my mind suggesting this is triggering the 'disable adblocker message' '??

I have not really looked much further but see the RealMedia stuff is VERY specific:

Code: Select all

http://realmedia.channel4.com/RealMedia/ads/adstream_lx.ads/channel4.newcu/channel4/channel4/c4drama/46821/46821/001/L46/748020147/x12/4OD/MCCAIN_FOODS_G_010212_21333_1/MCCAIN_FOODS_G_010212_21333_1_CP/XXXXXXXXXXXXXXX?age=XX&gender=X&GUID=XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX&pos=x60

No ad block rules will work to get around this, there is a way to bypass their detection though. Does adblock have the functionality to fake the responses?
