srvtrck 5 seconds redirect delay?

Postby Libove » Wed Jul 04, 2018 2:40 pm

Hi Adblock community. For a while now, in Chrome (I think only in Chrome), I have sometimes seen websites (which I guess use srvtrack to track email and web link responses, so it's not malware-evil just ad/tracking-evil) put up a message with a countdown "If you are not redirected within 5 seconds, click here to continue" or something like that.
I'm guessing that this may be adblock or another of my privacy extensions.

In Chrome I have the following privacy related extensions loaded:
Adblock Plus 3.1
Disable HTML5 Autoplay 0.6.2 (yeah, I know...)
Ghostery - Privacy Ad Blocker 8.2.0
PhishProtect Beta 1.18
Tampermonkey 4.6 with WHICH SCRIPT?
Video Autoplay Blocker by Robert Sulkowski 1.0

Have any of you also seen this srvtrack redirect 5 seconds delay and have you identified what's causing it?

thanks,
Libove

This one just happened:
https://dyn.com/dns/
.. and then click on the SIGN IN link in the upper right, and select Dynamic DNS (DDNS) which goes to the webpage https://account.dyn.com/entrance/
(Hm. I wanted to attach a screenshot, but I guess that's not possible in this forum?)

Here's what appears:
URL: r.srvtrck.com/v1/redirect?url=https%3A%2F%2Fdyn.com%2Fdns%2F%23&api_key=d5c55015a2a3677bbc4a1cfff9864103&site_id=2c....
[ countdown timer from 5 ]
If you are not redirected click here

I note that I cannot force this to reproduce; it happened, and now if I reload the tab or close and open a new tab and navigate back I don't get the 5 seconds countdown.
(After I post this I'll exit Chrome entirely and retry and come back and report here)

No, even after exiting and restarting Chrome that particular page doesn't do it again. I'm not sure if that's some kind of between-sessions memory or if whatever srvtrack or something else is doing doesn't happen every time.

I note too that I received a reply from Ghostery (below). So something surely does seem to be going on, and it would be great if the Adblock folks and the Ghostery folks (and all the other privacy extension folks) could work together on it.

thanks,
-Jay

Hi!

Thanks for using Ghostery!

We are aware of this conflict between extensions as they race to capture and redirect each other's requests as it's taken for a tracker. Fortunately, this does not disable any functionality.
We are in the process of devising a fix on our side, but we cannot account for other extensions.
Thanks for your feedback, and we apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you.

Best,

Ghostery Support"

Got another example.
From a Google News link to a WSJ article (I am a WSJ subscriber but in this particular browser I wasn't logged in).
When I clicked the "To continue reading ... login" link to go to the WSJ login page, I got another 5-second srctrack.com redirect countdown.

Hi @mapx,
I'm pretty sure that I don't have a spyware infection. Full scans by both Avast antivirus and Malwarebytes don't find anything, plus we have the comment from the Ghostery team earlier in this thread that they're aware of it being a bad interaction among multiple anti-tracking extensions.
Also, this happens on all of my systems, which are of varying ages, but all share my Google-sync'd Chrome extensions list.

You should use chrome portable (just for testing))
https://portableapps.com/apps/internet/ ... e_portable

and install ABP and then begin testing those sites (adding 1 by 1 your extensions).

I tested
Code: Select all
https://dyn.com/dns/
and I get no such srvtrck
