It seems like soon, Chrome extensions will not be able to use the webRequest API, and instead will need to use a much more limited declarativeNetRequest API; even worse, the set of redirection rules will need to be baked into the extension rather than downloaded elsewhere (so even more limited than ABP for iOS), and it will be limited to 30,000 rules: https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2019/01 ... -blockers/
On a minor note, the declarativeWebRequest API that I long wished to finally see has been cancelled entirely (not in the article but in the Google draft document it links to).
