Duped by Ad-Blocker masquerading as Adblock Plus - advice pl

My Adblock Plus icon had disappeared, and everything I looked at was covered in pesky gambling ads. I Googled what I thought was Adblock Plus to reinstate it - how was it removed, and by whom/what? - and have installed something called 'Ad Blocker' which did a good job of imitationg ABP, right down to the shield, which is red, and shows the letters ADB instead of ABP.

Question: Have I just downloaded a pile of Google intrusive sh1t? Should I get rid of it? Where did Adblock Plus go?
