When subscription download fails, what is the error message from ABP in the Browser Console? (Ctrl-Shift-J)

For any subscription URL it looks like this:

GET http://any-sybscription-url-here [HTTP/1.1 200 OK 36ms]
GET http://any-sybscription-url-here [HTTP/1.1 200 OK 35ms]
GET http://any-sybscription-url-here [HTTP/1.1 200 OK 41ms]
GET http://any-sybscription-url-here [HTTP/1.1 200 OK 36ms]
GET http://any-sybscription-url-here [HTTP/1.1 200 OK 35ms]
Adblock Plus: Downloading URL http://any-sybscription-url-here failed (synchronize_connection_error) Download address: http://any-sybscription-url-here?addonN ... tVersion=0 Channel status: 0 Server response: 2001 downloader.js:225

Hmm... by any chance do these subscriptions contain a line like:

Code: Select all

! Redirect: http://this-subscription's-same-url
?
Because I can reproduce this issue with a test subscription like that...

Yep, they do. They were under different URLs in the past. After removing redirect on my own set of rules they now update just fine. Case closed :-)

Not quite. That is not intended behavior:
https://adblockplus.org/en/filters#special-comments wrote:
! Redirect: http://example.com/list.txt

This comment indicates that the filter list has moved to a new download address. Adblock Plus will ignore any file contents beyond that comment and immediately try downloading from the new address. In case of success the address of the filter list will be updated in the settings. **This comment is ignored if the new address is the same as the current address**, meaning that it can be used to enforce the "canonical" address of the filter list.
(emphasis mine)

@moderators: should this thread be moved to bug reports?

When I add e. g. https://www.fanboy.co.nz/fanboy-adblock.txt ot ABP, it redirects to EasyList and I can update it without issues.

@MonztA: To reproduce the bug we diagnosed you would have to change the redirect comment in https://www.fanboy.co.nz/fanboy-adblock.txt to

Code: Select all

! Redirect: https://www.fanboy.co.nz/fanboy-adblock.txt

I have access to two networks. When I connect to Mediacom, I am unable to install or update the filters. When I use AT&T, the updates work fine. I believe Mediacom is purposely blocking access to the updates to prevent blocking of their ads. Once I have updated using my AT&T connection, the ads are blocked when I connect back to Mediacom. I would suggest that you also try a different network to do the updates to see if yours is also blocking Adblock filter updates.

Could you check whether you're using IPv6 or IPv4 to connect to the internet? This might be different depending on your ISP.
