I have never seen a Taboola ad that was "not attention grabbing" nor have I seen one that was "relevant to the content they are served along". Taboola is a scourge. It's shocking that it was ever even considered for inclusion in the whitelist, and now that it has firmly proven that it can't produce non-intrusive ads, it should be removed entirely and permanently from the whitelist.

Hi markb, I understand your concerns, we've had a few issues and potential violations with Taboola ads before as more users were making similar reports -you can just read the whole thread-. But my last answer refers to any Taboola ad you may see with ABP enabled. ABP users are served a smaller, straight forward ad that excludes crappy images and attention grabbing messages screaming for clicks. I suggest you to surf any website using Taboola ads delivered to our userbase and submit a screenshot of whatever ads you think are bad. We'll be happy to bring them up for discussion and eventually remove them.

Hi there,

for clarification: Both Outbrain and Taboola serve 1st party and 3rd party recommendations. 1st party ones are links within the very same domain, which aren't ads and therefore aren't blocked. 3rd party ads are labeled as such with the tag 'sponsored' and therefore in compliance with the Acceptable Ads criteria.

Same applies there. Those Taboola ads are all 1st party recommendations and therefore they don't qualify as proper ads. At least that's what I could reproduce on my computer: no 3rd party ads, just 1st party recommendations.

Thanks,

Thanks,
This is not true, you can identify 3rd ads by the Gray site title under each image + text.
as you can see, both outbrain and taboola ads on every screenshot I shared are combined from 1st ads and 3rd ads.
in this screenshot: https://goo.gl/7y1Wy9 there are three 1st and and three 3rd ads.
in this screenshot: https://goo.gl/dE6ZT7 there are 6 3rd ads and only 2 1st ads.
in this screenshot: https://goo.gl/ebGSrf there are three 1st ads and three 3rd ads.

you can also identify 3rd outbrain ads by their url, which goes to paid.outbrain.com instead of traffic.outbrain.com for 1st ads.

Hi, I did not say that there were only 1st ads on those links/screenshots. Both outbrain and taboola widgets are quite often a combination of both. The point is, only 3rd party ads qualify as such. Please keep that in mind when evaluating those widgets against the Accetpable Ads criteria. Thanks.

yes, that's what you've said: " Those Taboola ads are all 1st party recommendations - I could reproduce on my computer: no 3rd party ads, just 1st party recommendations"
so the fact that there are 6 3rd ads which takes 60% of my screen is allowed?

That's what I could reproduce on my machine at least. Happy to keep on testing if you can send over a few links. In any case, that one screenshot has 3 1st party and 3 3rd party ads, which is still in compliance with the Acceptable Ads criteria.

Thanks for the link. I checked it an saw the ads. However, they are in compliance with the AA criteria: They're labeled, static, well integrated and they take less than the max 25% allowed below the fold:

Placement
Ads must not disrupt the user's natural reading flow. Such ads must be placed on top, side or below the Primary Content.

The 'Primary Content' is defined as (based on Mozilla's description of the <main> HTML element): The Primary Content consists of content that is directly related to, or expands upon the central topic of a document or the central functionality of an application. This content should be unique to the document, excluding any content that is repeated across a set of documents such as sidebars, navigation links, copyright information, site logos, and search forms (unless, of course, the document's main function is a search form).

I was quite happy with showing non-intrusive ads, especially as someone who has a few sites that get ad revenue. Most of the time, the ads are indeed non-intrusive and often related to services that I care about or are at least somewhat related to the sites they are shown on and will even get some engagement on my end. I would like to reward responsible advertising.

Scenarios like, however, this make it no longer worth it and I don't blame anyone else for disabling all ads because of it:

http://vim.wikia.com/wiki/Highlight_all ... rn_matches

And I was really hoping ABP would be responsive and responsible with this instead of whitelisting repeat offenders. There should be a three-strikes rule or similar for cases like this, and Taboola definitely fits the bill for an ad agency that should be blocked.
