Blocking So Called Acceptable Ads for Adblock Plus 1.3.4

Post by Ascii2 »

I have installed Adblock Plus 1.3.4 (for Opera) on Opera 12.18. Adblock Plus 1.3.4 appears to be the last version for Presto-based Opera.

The EasyList subscription is active.

I did notice that many ads are not blocked, which appears to be the intention of the so called "acceptable ads" that are described:
en/acceptable-ads

According to the en/acceptable-ads webpage, the so called "acceptable ads" may be disabled by unchecking the option to allow acceptable ads. The option, however, does not appear to be available in Adblock Plus 1.3.4 (for Opera).

How the the so called "acceptable ads" be disabled for Adblock Plus 1.3.4 (for Opera)?

To download the Adblock Plus 1.3.4 (for Opera) add-on, browse https://addons.opera.com/en/extensions/ ... a-adblock/ with an Opera 12.18 User Agent such as

Code: Select all

Opera/9.80 (Windows NT 5.1) Presto/2.12.388 Version/12.18
, and click the "Add to Opera" image.

Alternately, I have mirrored the add-on and it is available at:

if you don't see any disabling option probably ABP does not using the acceptable list.

you can subscribe it directly adding it in your options page (add as different subscription)

After testing the behavior of Adblock Plus 1.3.4 on Presto-based Opera 12.18, the acceptable ads are definitely displayed.

Further, I examined the source code and found many references to the so-called acceptable ads and the subscription list is hard-coded into the source as:

Code: Select all

    subscriptions_exceptionsurl: "https://easylist-downloads.adblockplus.org/exceptionrules.txt",
I had tried to remove all the related code for the so-called acceptable ads, including the locales information, and rebuild (Zip) the add-on. I uninstalled the unmodified Adblock Plus 1.3.4, the installed my modified version of Adblock Plus, but the ad filtering results appeared unchanged. Do I also have to make changes to the "config.xml" file of the modified add-on?

Are the old Opera 12.18 add-on related preferences (such as the so-called acceptable ads subscription) retained past the unistallation of an add-on?

To be clear, I want to disable the so called Acceptable Ads not enable them.
