Adblock Plus on IE8.1

Post by sdw0406 »

Hi,
I've just installed Adblock Plus on IE 8.1 but I keep getting adverts, I've uninstalled/reinstalled many times but to no avail. Also the ADP icon does not show anywhere on my screen, not even on the status bar.
Any ideas of what is causing this problem???

Many thanks

In IE, make sure "Enable 3rd-Party Browser Extensions*" is check-marked.
Tools (or cog menu)/Internet options/Advanced tab/Browsing section.

I am having the same problem -- Well, I have had Adblock for a long while, but now I am getting ads where I didn't have them previously. The third-party box is checked. I may have done something to the privacy settings, but I can't figure out what. I just want the ads to stop. Thanks.

Ads are not blocked -- I reinstalled, third-party box is checked.

Carefully read that post that GJL just linked to.

Yeah -- funny about the "buzzin'" -- but the link doesn't work. And I am still dealing with ads by the carload. Oh, the link worked before I closed IE, but there was no "ini."

Joe, the patterns.ini file you need to delete is at the end of this file path. We don't know your User Name so where it says "YOUR USER NAME" in the example below you need to delete the quoted text & insert your own user name. You may have to change the "View" settings on your computer so you can see "Hidden" &/or "Protected" files. Revert to original "View" settings when finished. The View settings are found on the "Tools" menu under "Folder Options" "View" Tab.

C:\Users\YOUR USER NAME\AppData\LocalLow\Adblock Plus for IE\Patterns.ini

Did everything as directed. Perhaps I have the incorrect User Name. How do I check that?

Control Panel/User Accounts & your account (User) name should be visible there. You will still probably need to turn on hidden & protected files from the View tab mentioned previously so you can see them in windows explorer.

So sorry -- I am a tech illiterate. Is there any way I can speak with someone who can walk me through this? Thanks.

Joe, look at this youtube video
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P2gynTX09ZA
Following the steps shown, also turn on "show file extensions".
After hidden files & extensions are turned on,
open file/windows explorer
click on "Computer" to expand it
click "Local drive C: to expand it
Click on "Users" so it is highlighted
Look for the Search box
Type Patterns.ini in the search box
When Patterns.ini is found delete it, (don't delete any other file).

Open IE & a new patterns.ini should download. Adds should be gone.

I can't make it any easier than this.
