Don't use ABP for IE11 because it is completely useless

Post by ABPexuser »

I've got 2 PC's. A desktop, and a laptop. Both have windows 10, one's an AMD processor, the other is an Intel. The desktop is built from scratch, the laptop is an out-of-the-box Dell.

Why is it that I have THE SAME ISSUE on both of my PC's, but the programmers at ABP can't reproduce the issue? Because their software is beyond repairable at this point. That's why.

Pick a web page, any web page. Here's a list to make it easy:

Code: Select all

http://www.cbc.ca
http://www.cnn.com
http://www.ncix.com
http://www.ebay.ca
ALL websites (except youtube, so far) are completely broken when using ABP for IE. They might work for 2-3 minutes, but then "Webpage has stopped responding..." dialog box appears and IE has to recover the web page. Disable ABP: problem disappears. Enable ONLY ABP addon: problem immediately returns.

TO ABP DEVELOPERS: Do not ask me for more info. There is LOTS of info out there from just about EVERY ABP for IE user. We ALL have the same problem. Do not ask me to try another browser. I have no idea of or interest in ABP's functionality in software that I don't use. I use IE11.

This issue has been ongoing for at least 2 years now based on every forum post I can find, and every developer says they can't reproduce the issue, or they need more info. If you can't reproduce this issue, don't respond. Or better yet, respond with honesty and admit that you can't figure out ABP for IE.

I believe that the culprit is related to IE's Protected Mode; disabling it seems to resolve the issue for me as the pages load normally despite having ABP active and this without any specific additional whitelisting. Is this a known issue/conflict or normal per se.

Swing and a miss. Aside from leaving me more susceptible to malware, turning protected mode off changed nothing. The same problem persists.

I also find it mildly antagonizing that on the main page at https://adblockplus.org it says quite plainly that "We listen to our users...." but there is absolutely no "Contact Us" that exists on the site. They don't offer "support". Instead they refer users to a user-based forum so they can attempt to figure it out on their own. Thanks for "listening", but I'm actually searching for solutions to problems with your software. That is going to require more than Eyeo GmbH listening.

As you see above there is a ticket on the bug tracker. Add your comments there.

The bug tracker requires ANOTHER login ID and password that I don't have and am unwilling to create. If you'd like to add my comments to that ticket yourself, feel free. I'm not signing up for another account to solve this problem. That what THIS account and forum are for.

Also, version 1.6 has the same issue I initially complained about, and also hangs/stalls a lot worse than version 1.5. It sometimes takes 10+ seconds for a webpage to scroll up or down in response to my mouse input. Version 1.5 did not include this "feature".

Also curious as to why this issue https://issues.adblockplus.org/ticket/4320 is STILL listed as "new" even though it's 6 months old ( and the actual issue its self is much older), and there is no one from Eyeo GmbH assigned to the issue, and also why it is only P2 priority?

How come I can make a list of websites I DON'T want ABP to work in, but I can't make a list of sites I DO want it to work on?

Lets face it, the ONLY website ABP for IE doesn't appear to render useless is YouTube. It appears to actually work here like 99% of the time. So, instead of having to add EVERY other webpage to the "disable ABP" list, I could add ONE webpage to the "enable ABP" list.

Such a simple and obvious idea the programmers either couldn't come up with, or purposely left out. I would imagine it was purposely left out so users don't realistically have the option of only using ABP on YouTube. That would place too many potential limits on revenue streams, right Eyeo GmbH?

Still no progress on this issue? The bug tracker has more info added, but no work done on the issue: https://issues.adblockplus.org/ticket/4320

Big surprise.

If ABP is such a problematic and sub-par product with virtually ZERO support, what can we expect from Eyeo GmbH in the future? More of the same, one would assume.
