Greetings
I like to support websites, specially those that I visit frequently and I think the two existing option of 1)allow "non-intrusive advertising" and 2)Manual disable ads on this site are not sufficient enough. (what if my fav site is not on your list, what if I am ok with some intrusive ads but don't want to see ton of it!)
Lets give option to end-user to do following in order to support websites s/he likes:
1)Show X ads for all websites (ie I won't mind seeing 1 ad for any site I visit; perhaps chosen randomly)
2)Option to 'show X ads for this website' (ie I could decided I am fine with seeing 5 ads for a site that I visit often)
3)Bonus: ability to pick type of ad(banners smaller than X or text only ads, etc)
Thanks
More options for end-users to enable ads on favorite sites
Re: More options for end-users to enable ads on favorite sites
The problem with that is that we are recognizing ads based on downloaded resources. An ad might require multiple resources to be downloaded for it to be shown. On the other hand one resource can create multiple ads on the page. Therefore we don't know how many resources we need to allow being downloaded to achieve that a certain amount of ads are being shown.seaad wrote:1)Show X ads for all websites (ie I won't mind seeing 1 ad for any site I visit; perhaps chosen randomly)

That's a great idea. What kind of options would you like to have specifically?seaad wrote:3)Bonus: ability to pick type of ad(banners smaller than X or text only ads, etc)

Thanks for explanation greiner. I assume a "downloaded resources" would means a call to known 'url' on the list that would show the ads, but would a resource show ads in same place/format (ie a resource called would show one or X ads in a div located in left side). To support the site I love that would be good enough for me!greiner wrote:The problem with that is that we are recognizing ads based on downloaded resources. Thus, I think even option to permit X "download resources" per site would be still good. with a short explanation that a resources may be one or more ads or non!
Look at patreon.com people won't mind to support the creators they love. I want to support a site that had a content that I visited once but its not practical to click to disable ad on that site as I won't go there again, and I think we all know we get these content for free because of ads, but the mission is to have reasonable number of them.
I think, giving option to permit X resources also gives more legitimacy to the project, as adblock won't be a tool to block ads, rather enabling individual user to consume reasonable ads!
First, as an IT guys, I know that such option needs to be advanced enough but not too complicated to scare most users! Luckily, we can say those who install ad-block are more tech-savy. Sadly, I have been using ad-block for such long time that not even sure about all type of Ads! I encourage community to contribute and say what kind of option would like to see but I would:greiner wrote:seaad wrote:That's a great idea. Wanted options:
-Simple image banner
-simple text banner
-Clearly stated sponsor Links
-Clearly stated sponsor contents (this maybe iffy, but again all about option to users)
-Ads that give commission to the site (iffy but hey if my purchase helps the site that helps me, why not)
-Ads that offer discount (true discount, not fake one)
Not wanted option:
-Animation ads (just because of those ugly animations/flashing things)
-Auto play media ads (those silly ads that starts to play on page load)
-Screen blocking (any element that blocks access to the page, and needing to hit close OR worse doing a task)
-popups
p.s I understand permitting resources would be challenge as one may load few popup, thus maybe combining these two would be a better solution, for example I would permit 2 resources per site AND only static content
p.s.s the above suggestion also can be integrated as part of "Acceptable Ads" by Adblock
