Do Not Track

Post by mikeoneill »

The Do Not Track technical spec. (the Tracking Preference Expression or TPE document https://www.w3.org/TR/tracking-dnt/ ) was completed last year and, along with the Tracking Compliance and Scope or TCS document https://www.w3.org/TR/tracking-compliance/ is a W3C Candidate Recommendation

Although the Microsoft browsers are the only ones so far to implement the DNT consent API, there exists browser extensions e.g. http://baycloud.com/bouncer that do so, and there is a mechanism (the out-of-band consent or OOBC mechanism) to signal consent to browsers that do not yet support it.

Both mechanisms are described here: http://baycloud.github.io/DNTGuide

Since a significant driver for people installing ABP are concerns about privacy and tracking, there should be (at least) be an option in ABP so that "acceptable ads" selectors do not white-list third-parties when either a) DNT is not being respected or complied with, or b) the user has not given their consent so that it is not indicated by either the DNT:0 signal or the OOBC consent mechanism.

I understand it would be difficult for ABP to introduce this as a default option at the moment, but the option should at least be there for now and publicised.
