Slowing things down

I have used AdBlock Plus on my MBP--all apps up to date--for several years. Lately I been experiencing very slow Web connections. Often the red ball in the AB+ icon would show 50, 60 even 100 blocks, and when it was going through this routine the pages stopped loading until it finished. I disabled AB+ and things seemed to speed up again. I don't recall the slows being an issue before. Anyone else have this problem? Any ideas or suggestions? Thanks
