Questions about changes to ABP on Safari

Post by scotnewon96 »

Blocking annoying ads on Safari is still possible. Due to changes in the way Safari handles extensions, the old version of Adblock Plus for Safari will no longer work.

The good news is the all-new Adblock Plus for Safari app allows you to continue blocking annoying ads while using Safari.

Get Adblock Plus on the App Store

Note: This version is missing some features from the old extension. These features will be added with future updates.

QUESTION: What features are missing?

Canvas blocking, by any chance? If yes, then I'm going to stop using Safari until those features are added back in.

Gotta say, the comm about the change is a bit vague (aka sketchy). Why is that?

Safari switched to a different extension system a while back, which is quite a bit more limiting. Therefore we had to start from scratch and cannot provide more advanced features such as anti-circumvention to counter-act websites that try to circumvent ad blockers.

In comparison to that, other browsers such as Chrome, Firefox, Microsoft Edge and Opera all support web extensions, which provides better ways for ad blockers than Safari's content blocking extensions. In Safari 14, Apple again switches its extension system to one that's more similar to web extensions, so we're currently looking into those. It's unfortunate though that, unlike all other browsers, Safari extensions can only developed using Apple hardware.

What are you referring to with "Canvas blocking"?
