Sites that won't accept browsers using Adblock Plus

Post by JohnCollins »

I'm seeing a few sites that won't let you browse them if you're using Adblock. I don't want to enable ads on those sites as they unleash a torrent of ads if I do.

Would it be possible for it to "lie" about its presence on those sites, so they go through all the motions of receiving the ads but don't actually display anything and the sites can't detect you're using it?

just report here the sites / pages (direct links to the specific pages where you get the detecting messages), browser version, ABP version, filter lists enabled in your ABP

No: If content is blocked or hidden from the user, Javascript on the page can tell that it has been blocked or hidden.

Instead, we develop case-by-case workarounds for anti-adblock measures.

Thanks could I draw your attention to the following UK sites which refuse to serve Adblock users:

telegraph.co.uk
channel4.com

The Telegraph site has a feeble "paywall" system which limits non-paying users to 15 articles per month which up until today you could get round by just deleting the cookies but now they've got an anti-Adblock thing.

I'm not prepared to make it an exception because they'd abuse it.

Neither am I prepared to pay for it as the editorial views of that paper are so ridiculous that I'm only looking at it as "something I love to hate".

I'd prefer to do without it than pay for it or take their ads. Their loss not mine I think.

When do you get the anti adb on telegraph ? I entered on some article page and no anti crap.

for channel4 try

Code: Select all

@@/crossdomain.xml$domain=channel4.com
@@||ak.http.anno.channel4.com^$domain=channel4.com
@@||cf.http.anno.channel4.com^$domain=channel4.com
as I told you above, if still in trouble provide all the details requested

It might do the first page OK on telegraph but if you start following links it soon comes up with the anti-ad-block stuff as an overlay on what you're looking at.

I'll try the channel 4 stuff later.

In the meantime my browser is FF 43.0.4 on Ubuntu 14.04 (64 bit) ABP 2.7.1 I haven't changed the filters from what it came with.

for telegraph: I still can't reproduce the issue (could be for geographical reason / location)

when you get the issue, just submit an issue report and then post here the report link.

Here is a site that just won't you use it at all unless you disable the adblocker
http://www.forbes.com/forbes/welcome/

I'm guessing as sites evolve so do adblockers.

Thanks for Adblock.
