but I'm not good with adblock rules, so help is welcome. It would be best to block the javascript files/functions if that is possible, but I don't know how to identify them. This blocks some of the infinite scrolling articles, but only hides them, so they're still being loaded in the background.

There isn't a generic solution for this, because infinite-scroll can be accomplished in many ways; furthermore, some sites are built to deliver their content in infinite-scroll only, so disabling that will disable access to some content.
