There are multiple issues here. First is the actual replacement which is complicated to say the least. Second is the JavaScript code - it is hard to come up with an universal solution here, giving filter list authors control over this JavaScript code is a security issue however.

The best solution for embedded objects is Firefox implementing the same feature as Opera: a placeholder is displayed in place of ANYTHING that requires a plugin. You click on the placeholder and the plugin starts. It is just ON/OFF, no filters, no rules.

IMHO ABP currently is showing some limitations when it comes to javascript in general and especially inline javascript.
You can block external JS files. Sometimes it happens that the advertisement is mixed in the same external JS file that is needed for some/many other functions of the site so you can't block it.
With inline JS you can't do anything.

I'm writing from the future. Surprisingly unblocking still sucks in all the major adblockers. If you block something by accident one thing you can do is kill Firefox via Task Manager so that the change isn't saved. This works for a lot of stuff in Firefox.

Finally this page (which in the future becomes the top hit on Google) has an answer. Also in the future people have come to realise the merits of solving old threads, rather than making duplicate threads just to appease a minority small-minded admins.

Correction 2 clicks
1.turn off ad blocker
2.refresh page
3.turn ad blocker on
4. enjoy your ads
