My email server is getting attempts of delivering emails from server16.adblockplus.org (88.198.66.34), however the sender's email address fails validation because it's: phpuser@linux.local

Misconfiruged or hacked server?

Indeed, it was a misconfiguration. The hostname of server16 was erroneously configured as linux.local and is now fixed.
