ABP Awareness

Post by wyldthing2 »

Thinking about how well adblock plus has reached so many users, I was wondering if the website has ever thought about collecting data so we can find out which way is best to get the word out about adblock plus.

For example, it's weird that adblock has more chrome users than adblock plus, but maybe it's just a matter of time since adblock plus hasn't been on chrome as long.

So anyway, my question is do we know where adblock plus gets its awareness? Word-of-mouth only?

On what are you basing that statement? The Chrome Web Store doesn't make the exact numbers public from what I can see: it says "10,000,000+ users" for both add-ons.

Social media is a better bet.

So I got that thought from the wikipedia article on adblock. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AdBlock

Not that wikipedia is the ultimate source of knowledge, but it quotes the adblock and chrome pages saying that: "As of July 2014, AdBlock is the most popular Google Chrome extension, with over 30,000,000 users,[6][7] and the most popular Safari extension.[8]"

So maybe they're exaggerating, but the proliferation of either is impressive. And I guess you might be right about the social media because I really don't think anyone hears about it anywhere else. I just question whether social media would have THAT large of an impact considering that they only have half a million members on their facebook page and the posts only get 20 or so likes.

Google searches may be huge, the search trend for "block ads" is constantly increasing and adblock and adblock plus are at the top of the list for results. But that would just mean that adblock and adblock plus were just the most popular choice at first, so they got to the top of the list and now they get constant attention because of their lead.
