Issues in the new ABP (version 3) for firefox

Various discussions related to Adblock Plus development

To: Addblock devs

Will you bring back the Element Hiding Helper for Addblock+ ?

With the updates and all I can't even open the list of my own filters that I had in FF 56. Where is it?
Some Divs are not being blocked by "Click on element to hide".
What are the changes of ABP+ being similar to the one in FF 56?

Thanks in advance,
Max.

@xtcmax, read the thread.

Then about EHH: a similar functionality is already in the ABP 3, will be improved as the devs already said above.
Your custom filters: go into settings (options), advanced, in the section of custom filters (My filter list)

For other filter issues report in the firefox forum with exact examples.

The dev tool is a complete disaster.

It's slow, it's buggy, it doesn't load properly half the time (the website loads but not the corresponding lines in dev tool - that remains empty and often a firefox drop down or popunder toolbar appears telling me to quit adblock or just whitelist everything on that site, which I absolutely don't want to do and defeats the entire purpose of having this addon.

A separate page for the logger - totally controlled by ABP - would be much better, hoping the developers will agree with such a solution.

Terrible, terrible, terrible! This is worse than Apple often does with their software. Let essential features disappear, make the UI dumber, deprive the user of control.
The two worst things: The "blockable items list" has disappeared, and the filter editor is now much less comfortable, not to say useless (why downgrade from a supportive filter edit feature to a simple text edit feature??? They don't seem to like their users edit the filters at all)
On the other hand, features to ALLOW ads are developed... Seems the advertising industry has excerted their influence after all...
How can I get back the last "useful" version (2.9.1, I guess)? Any help is welcome. Or suggestions for a replacement?

@rvw1968, read the whole thread, you'll get your answers (and why did happen all this - it's mozilla in the middle ..)

The developers are trying to improve the things => https://issues.adblockplus.org/ticket/6044

No its not just mozilla in the middle, but you guys as well. You have shown us, how irresponsible and un-professional is the team behind Adblockplus.

You had advance knowledge of the upcoming Mozilla update, that would basically kill your product. Yes, its okay.. if you decided to write the whole add-on from scratch, but you should have been communicative and apologetic to your customers about it, even if its not your fault to begin with. But you didn't. Even now, the Adblockplus.org front page sits like a duck .. as if nothing has happened. And to top it all off, you also quietly pushed a basically crap update to the people.

1. If it had been any other company with some common sense.. it would have announced this major change on its front page, then told the customers how you guys are handling this decision, throw-in a "why you decided to start from scratch" article from your president/ceo.

2. Then first and foremost, gave easy instructions with screenshots to explain, how to make-do temporarily (until you can bring back all the features, [which you do not guarantee you would though]). Link them on front page.

3. Then you would have opened a FAQ section and linked it to your front page, where anonymous users could post questions (so that they don't have to register on this forum) and troubleshoot their problems.

How hard was that? Sad, just Sad!

Edit: Btw, I just noticed the terrible memory overusage (1.3GB! from a single custom filter!)

It was published months ago on adblock plus blog:
https://adblockplus.org/blog/the-plan-t ... -extension

And well-known on mozilla forums / blogs like for any other old addon. A lot of addons wont be available for the new webextensions framework due to exactly the same limitations.

I guess you didn't read the whole thread.
Replacing the old EHH would be "block element" (click ABP icon, "block element"), which still has some issues (mozilla / ABP) for the windows users (but it seems not for all of them).

To see the blockable items (and block / add exceptions) => https://adblockplus.org/forum/viewtopic.php?p=172306#p172306

(I removed your "advices" as totally useless)

For "terrible memory overusage" file an issue on the bug tracker:
https://issues.adblockplus.org

but be sure testing in a clean profile, no other enabled addon

You should realize, most people don't have time to read your blog. Front page should have been proper.

as for the "months back", try setting a alarm to ring at 3am, when you want to wake up at 7am.
Thanks for calling a user's genuine make-do measures for your broken "block element" feature as useless, and letting him know that you changed his words and deleted them without permission. Awesome Public Relations mapx!

Refusing to accept your mistakes .. will not lead you to further promotions.

@abtocool, ok, you expressed your harsh opinion, please don't continue with the same useless complains.

If you want to help the devs, report on the bug tracker (see above the link) the memory bug. On the bug tracker there are proposals for improving the new ABP for FF.

Just to be clear: I'm not part of the ABP team, I only help them - and especially the users - as a ..volunteer.
Probably here should be present the "community managers" of eyeo but probably they have something more important to do

If you want to complain with the ABP founder go here:
https://adblockplus.org/releases/adbloc ... x-released

about the "block element" issues on windows:

@mapx

Now you are talking some sense. I will let this one go. After all, I do recognize the good things ABP Team has done over the years (For which I pray to the Almighty to give them a fitting reward)

Fair enough, I will take back a few things I have said here.., though I would advise you too ... not to call the opinion of user's of your product (or the one your represent) as useless or edit other people's posts except for removing cursing, etc.

I expect the ABP team to be more communicative in the future, fix all these issues (to file each of them, I have no time) in reasonable time, and not go cohoots with the advertisers forsaking common people for mere worldly gain :?

That would be all. Peace.

Frequent large disk writes since 3.0

Postby krestin » Fri Nov 17, 2017 12:18 pm

Recently I noticed an increased amount of disk activity, specifically relatively large writes every minute. iotop suggests the culprit is 'firefox [DOM Worker]', writing several MBs at a time. If I disable ABP, these writes stop. When I re-enable ABP, the writes resume again. Could there be something in the ABP 3.0 update causing this? If so, is it related to a feature that we could disable in settings?

Adblock Plus 3.0.1
Firefox 57.0 64-bit
Ubuntu 16.04 64-bit

Can we at least talk about sorting (I mean the complete inability to sort ANYTHING, either in the addon itself or when accessing ABP via F12/dev tool)?

How on the earth do I find anything?

How on the bloody earth can I investigate and discover what exact ABP item is preventing a specific feature on a webpage (for example a picture slide) from working and on the other end, how do I discover what I myself have added (either blocked or whitelisted)?

Where is everything? I can't find a thing. A list is presented to me and what? Am I supposed to sift through thousands of lines of gobbledygook (go line by line) just in order to find out what is going on???
