Daily Mail Now Detecting Ad Blockers

Post by Dypsis »

Daily Mail have now implemented ad blocking detection.
Does anyone know a way around it?

@Dypsis

Thanks for reaching out to us! We are aware that more sites are requiring our users to turn off their ad blockers. It is legally within their right to request this, but we do not think it is a best practice for promoting a fully sustainable web. Not to worry we are investigating ways to legally combat this to better serve our users.

Thanks

Thanks sbell.

There are that many ads and videos popping up, the site is almost unusable without an ad blocker.
I don't know how they expect people to use it like that. :?

@Dungogvolts and @Dypsis

Yeah, its an extremely intrusive tactic. We are optimistic that our mission for creating a fully sustainable web will continue to catch on. Also if you notice a contact option for publishers using this practice, please make them aware of your feelings. Enough complaints may impact change.

Thanks

I have found a way round it that seems to work but I don't know how permanent it will be. It involves throwing out all your Oreos and cancelling further deliveries of them. I know this is rather cryptic but I don't want to make it too obvious in case the DM techies scour sites like this and adapt accordingly. I'm sure you're all smart enough to work it out anyway :)

Yeah way to cryptic for me but I have found that by using Firefox's own option under the hamburger bars It gets rid of just about everything annoying. Also a little cryptic.
Worked out what you were referring to with Oreos and yes works so far. Thanks.

Actually I didn't need to be cryptic after all :? Removing/blocking DM cookies allows access to the site but then pages with embedded videos don't always display properly. Still, at least you can read most of the text and that's better than having half your screen filled with intrusive ads!

Yeah works fine except if, like me, you like to leave comments on some stories deleting and stopping cookies does not allow me to login and leave comments.
Using Private Window in Firefox still allows me to do that so far and of course blocks adds except one that pops up when I scroll down to the comments section but it is easily removed by clicking the X in the box.
Sorry one more thing in Private Window you still have to turn off ABP but I don't see all the mess where the adds were the page is very clean.

Yes, private window seems to work quite well too, though the pages still don't always load properly and I have to refresh at least once. The box that contains a video breaks up and spreads over the text. I remember having this problem once before when DM changed its layout and either I fixed it with settings or it went away. I can't remember which. But as a workaround it's not too bad.

I never comment on stories but if you do, perhaps you could mention the annoyance caused by this anti-adblock measure :D

As someone here replied "It is legally within their right to request this" so trying to ask them not to in comments I think would be useless.
Also I have not, so far, had any problem with pages loading in Private Windows and I open stories/links in a new tab all the time and they open fine.
