"Recommend us on Facebook" button

Post by Michael »

Is there a way to hide the "Recommend us on Facebook" button recently added to the development builds? It would have been nice for there to have been some consultation on this menu option...

Yes, add this hiding rule for the toolbar icon:

Code: Select all

browser###abp-toolbar-recommendbutton
And/Or this one for the statusbar icon:

Code: Select all

browser###abp-status-recommendbutton

Wladimir, excuse my bluntness but what the hell

I'm starting to think you have sold out, google analytics on one of the pages, banners in the menu... What next, ads on the home page or in the menu ? It's starting to remind me of NoScript.

@ Fan

Thanks for the rules...

I have added them to my Antisocial subscription

Let's not overreact now. Wladimir has done everything he can to keep his code well documented and transparent. Comparing this to the noscript scandal is not appropriate nor fair. Last time I checked noscript doesn't even have a public repository, unlike ABP.

ABP is not going to become malicious.

I didn't mean any disrespect, (sometimes it takes some bluntness in order to get action taken) but I seriously doubt that if we turned back the clock a year or two Wladimir would hot have agreed to having banner of any sort in the context menu or having google analytics on any of the pages. I doubt the NoScript author intended for things to work out the way they did...

I feel we might be on a bit of a slippery slope and if me speaking out helps prevent ABP from sliding down it then I feel compelled to do so.

The button is fucking annoying and grabbed for attention. Kindly remove it.

Thanks Adblock Plus Fan. I've had a look at the code and, based on your suggestion, noticed that, instead of having to use two separate filters, both elements can be hidden with the rule browser##.abp-recommendbutton.

In the current form, I agree that the button is nothing but annoying and distracting, but I think if it was just a regular menu item, it would be OK.

You can also use the DOM Inspector to get id's classes etc. of specific elements of the Firefox user interface.

And I don't even have a Facebook account ! :)
It would be nice to know what is the direction and what we must expect in the future.

Sorry Wladimir I didn't expect this from you.

I am not a fan of Facebook like button, I personally hate them. Can you kindly remove them.

Btw, I have added a element hiding rule to hide the recommend us on facebook button to Annoyance list.

Obviously twitter integration:
"@adblockplus is amazing because ..."
"@adblockplus blocked ads on example.com - ..."
"@adblockplus failed on example.org - ..."

"Share" button, youtube and tumblr (for nsfw) are next.

I don't have a Twitter account either ! :)

BTW, MonztA:
I have read that blog post back then. Problem is that out of knowing Wladimir is working full time on ABP and being happy for him, I didn't get to know anything else about the traditional question of Open Source/Free software: "who pays the bills?". Out of selling to a big firm, I am aware of two working business models only, one is advertisement and the other is payed support.
