Issue reporter - adding a catch sentence for known issues

Post by Crits »

To begin, some interesting figures of the Liste FR (French filter list) I pulled out from the list of issue reports at the end of August:
Around 80% of the total sent reports were popup which were very probably due to an adware (not counting the other type of adwares like Text Enhance and Co)

One problem is these reports of adware is that they of course hide the interesting reports, and it can hard to find one's bearings in all this. There is a way to sort them by relevance, but this feature is not very accurate (and all the issue report due to an adware are still not flagged as known issues as there are a lot of different situations and domain names to list).

One thing to note is that Microsoft security reports often rank France as the #1 country which has the most (proportionally speaking) computers infected by adwares.
[BTW, for those who wouldn't know: Adblock Plus cannot block the popups that are due to an adware. That's why subscription authors have established a list of known issues that only the user can solve, including being infected by an adware. When an user submit a report for one of these known issues, he is given a link to a helping page that explains him how to proceed to solve his problem.]

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

From the access statistics of Lian's website, I found out that only a small percentage of the Liste FR users who posted a report of a popup flagged as a known issue due to a popup adware actually clicked on the link of the page that was given to them.

Why a so small percentage? I guess that:
- Internet users are lazy
- And above all, they prefer that ABP solves their problem for them instead they solve the problem on their own

When the issue is known, what is suggested to the user is simply: "The issue you reported is probably already known. More information: [link to some page]"
However, the user doesn't feel concern this way and doesn't know he has to solve his problem by himself. In several cases, he will just wait for something to happen.
What I suggest is:

1) Simple way: make the above sentence more catchy, like: "The issue you reported is probably already known, and you may be able to solve this problem by yourself. More information on how you you can proceed:"

2) A bit more difficult way: make the sentence even more catchy by personalizing it to the issue it concerns. Like:
- "The issue you reported is probably already known. You may have been infected by an adware. More information on how you can proceed to solve this problem:"
Or:
- "The issue you reported is probably already known. You may have a conflict with other add-ons of Firefox. More information on how you can proceed to solve this problem:
Maybe this can be implemented by adding one line at each section of https://hg.adblockplus.org/subscription ... nownIssues ? This would also help to solve the problem of localizing the strings.

Bump.

It can also be done with simple formatting, like putting a border around the sentence "The issue you reported is probably already known. [...]" and center it for example.
