Can't block pop-up

Post by Odin »

I have disabled Firefox pop-up blocking so I could control it from ADP. I also have the Element Hiding Helper. However, I'm unable to block with ADP the javascript pop-up [http://theskillspool.webs.com/press.html] that pops up upon the opening of http://theskillspool.webs.com/quotes.html. The most I can do is block the text in the pop-up -- not the pop-up itself. Can someone advise me?

The popup script is embedded in the web page itself, so Adblock Plus can't stop it. I suggest you enable Firefox's built-in popup blocking or use something like the NoScript extension to stop it.

Thanks, Alan, but I've already tried to accomplish this task with NoScript. The NoScript menu for the quotes page does not allow me to block the press pop-up.

It seems from what you say that I can block the pop-up with Firefox's basic functionality but not with ABP. Is ABP effective against pop-ups at all? If not, then I'll activate Firefox's anti-pop-up feature. If it is, however, then it would be impractical to use both, for incidences of pop-ups that I'd want to allow (since I could never be sure which blocking mechanism was blocking a particular pop-up). So I hope you can enlighten me.

Sure, Odin. I use all three: Adblock Plus, NoScript, and Firefox's built-in popup blocker. Although each of the three can block some popups, none of them can do it all. They complement each other.

Adblock Plus can block popups only if they're caused by something external to the web page, such as externally hosted scripts. NoScript and Firefox's built-in don't have that limitation. I still use Adblock Plus to block ads and other annoyances. Whenever Firefox's built-in popup blocker blocks a popup, it notifies you with a Notification bar right below the tab bar and also places a popup-blocked icon in the status bar.

Thanks again, Alan. I'm already using NoScript and ABP (as I indicated), and after your comment I'll try using FF's ad blocker as well. My concern has been that to *unblock* a pop-up I might have to go to one app and then another. But in many months of using FF I've had just this one need to unblock (and that's on my own website!). So it looks like any future unblocking needs should almost certainly involve the FF blocker, whose actions from what you tell me are easily detectable.

You're welcome. The built-in blocker makes it easy to add an exception for your own website.
