I’m having a lot of difficulties with this update of Adblock. I own a Macbook air and use safari 9 as my internet browser and recently ads on youtube started showing up. I installed this update since it claims it would have fixed the bugs for the youtube ads leaking through but it hasn’t done anything. I installed and reinstalled it but to no avail. My adblock works on chrome but its not working on safari. I don’t know what else to do. If anyone can help, I will donate as much as I can because I can’t take anymore of these ads.

Hey Anon, sorry to hear you’ve had all that trouble!

First of all, the previous release 1.12 had a bug which stopped YouTube adverts from being blocked for older versions of Safari. (When the flash player was being used.) This was my fault, sorry! That should be fixed in the current 1.12.1 release.

Secondly we had some trouble actually publishing the 1.12.1 release for Safari, initially a broken build was uploaded to our servers. We pulled that down as soon as we realised and the next day uploaded a fixed build. We’ve added a step to our release checklist to hopefully avoid that happening again!

Could you try installing Adblock Plus for Safari from our homepage again? With any luck it will work correctly for you now.

Thanks for your patience and for taking the time to get in touch, sorry again for all the trouble. Let me know how it goes.

    Cheers, Dave.

I was having many issues with ads in YouTube and Safari 9.0.2. Tried installing AdBlock 1.12.1 but it just has an error saying Safari can’t install this extension, than an error occurred. Short of migrating to Chrome which I do NOT want to do, what else can I do to update AdBlock on Safari??

    Reply from Dave Vandyke:

    Hi Lance,

Please try downloading and installing Adblock Plus for Safari from our website again, it should work now.

(On the day of the release a broken build was uploaded, which is why you received that error. We’ve since uploaded a fixed one.)

    Sorry for the trouble, Dave.

Adblock Plus 1.12.1 requires Safari 6 or higher, yet when I check the extensions in Safari 5.1.10 it shows as an update even though I presume it will not work in that version of Safari. Why is it listed as an update if it’s not compatible?

    Reply from Sebastian Noack:

There is no way to prevent installation (or limit updates) of extensions to a minimum Safari version (unlike Chrome). That is why we explicitly state Safari 6 as the minimum version officially supported. Chances are that Adblock Plus still works on Safari 5.1 though, feel free to try it on your own risk.

Im still getting the error Lance described.

    Reply from Dave Vandyke:

Sorry to hear that Allen. Did you make sure to download the Adblock Plus for Safari installer again?

(If you downloaded the broken build on the day of the release it won’t ever work. You need to delete it and download the fixed one instead.)

    Cheers, Dave.

Yeah neither of those links work. Just keep getting the same popup error

  6. Henrique · 2016-07-14 03:06 · #

    yeah, same here.

keep getting the same error over and over again:

An error occurred while installing the extension “Adblock Plus”.

any ideas on what might be causing this?

    Reply from Dave Vandyke:

Our software tester Scott and I tried again to reproduce the problem this morning but still couldn’t. Adblock Plus installed fine for us on Safari 6, 7, 8 and 9 from both our website and the Safari Extension Gallery.

We’re now out of ideas, could one of you file an issue on our issue tracker? We need as much information in order to reproduce the problem, full Safari version numbers, OS X version etc.

    Cheers, Dave.

was able to fix it somehow
restarted safari, uninstallled adblock plus, restarted mac, and tried again.

    finally no more ads! hahaha

    Reply from Dave Vandyke:

Excellent, happy it’s finally working for you Henrique!

For others who are seeing this problem I found out some more information this afternoon from Wladimir. Apparently if you have previously installed the extension from the Safari Extension Gallery and then try to install a new version from the Adblock Plus website (or vice versa) it won’t work. This is because they are signed with different certificates and therefore one cannot be installed over the other.

So for anyone else experiencing this error, make sure you uninstalled the old version of Adblock Plus before installing the new one.

Learn something new every day! Sorry for the trouble everyone, Dave.
